Welche Bettdecken-Größen gibt es und welche Größe ist für Ihr Bett ideal?

What sizes of duvets are available and which size is ideal for your bed?

The right bedding is essential for a relaxing and restful sleep. In addition to a high-quality mattress and bed linen, a suitable duvet is equally important. Not only the material and quality should be well researched, but also the available duvet sizes. Here you will find out which sizes are available and what suits you and your bed, so that you can sleep comfortably covered.

What is the right duvet size for me?

What could be better than snuggling under a cozy duvet in the cold season? But if a sleeping duvet is the wrong size, you wake up at night freezing and uncovered. Couples who sleep with one large duvet also know this struggle. While one sleeps peacefully, the other tries to pull the duvet towards them to cover up again.

So, if you are currently looking for new bedding, the question of the ideal size quickly arises. Which duvet is suitable for one person and which for two? Are there special formats for children? And what are the dimensions of a "normal" duvet? We will explain in detail which duvet sizes are available, what the standard sizes are and which version will satisfy your needs.

Standard Duvet Sizes in Germany

First of all, it is important to know that the standard sizes for adults and children's duvets vary from country to country. If you are not from Germany, you should therefore get an overview of the lengths and widths of duvets in your local area. In Germany, there are standard sizes for single duvets, double duvets and children's duvets that are almost identical everywhere. We have created a practical size chart for you that can serve as a guide:

What are the dimensions of a normal duvet?

When we talk about a "normal" duvet, we are referring to the standard size. As mentioned above, the standard size for one person is 135 x 200 cm, with extra-long duvets being 220 cm long. The normal duvet size for two people is 200 × 200 cm or 200 × 220 cm for extra-long. These formats are found in most bedrooms in this country, but that does not necessarily mean they provide a comfortable sleep for everyone. Perhaps a different duvet size would better suit your needs and your mattress.

What factors influence the choice of duvet size?

Which duvet size is perfect for you depends on several factors. Personal preferences naturally play a large role, but body height should also be considered. The general recommendation is to choose a size that is 20 cm longer than your body height and 50 cm wider than your mattress. However, not everyone has the same sense of comfort and feels comfortable with these measurements. We have put together some decision-making aids for choosing your new duvet.

    • Satisfaction with current duvet size: What are the dimensions of your current duvets? If you feel comfortable with this size, you can simply choose the same measurements when buying a new duvet. Then you also won't have to buy new bed linen. If, on the other hand, you are dissatisfied and the current duvet format disturbs your night's rest, it's time for a different size.
    • Body height: Should you opt for the standard length or the extra length? People who are up to 180 cm tall choose the normal 200 cm length. If you are taller, an extra-long duvet is recommended.
  • Personal preferences: One of the most important questions is how you like to cover yourself. Do you prefer to spread duvets loosely over yourself or snuggle deep into them? Here you can already estimate quite well which duvet dimensions are ideal for you.
  • Sleeping position and movement: Your sleeping position and movement during sleep also play a role. If you move a lot in your sleep and regularly wake up uncovered, an oversized duvet is recommended. Even if you sleep stretched out, the duvet must accommodate this position. If, on the other hand, you lie quietly with your legs pulled up, the duvet can be smaller.
  • Mattress size: When it comes to duvets, do you like them big? Nevertheless, you shouldn't immediately reach for an oversized one. Because if the duvet is much larger than your bed, the weight of the filling will pull it down at night. So, when choosing, also roughly orient yourself to the bed format.
  • Caring for your duvet: Do you plan to wash your down duvet yourself or send it to a specialist for cleaning? Here you need to consider that comfort sizes and duvets for two people usually do not fit into normal washing machines.

    Duvet Sizes for Two People

When two people sleep together in a bed, an important decision must be made for the couple's sleeping comfort: Should they sleep with two duvets or invest in one large duvet? Many couples find it nice to lie close together, but a shared duvet does not guarantee restful sleep for everyone. The following aspects should be considered if you are not sleeping alone in a bed:

      • Size difference: If one partner is significantly taller than the other, you should choose an extra-long duvet.
  • Standard size or comfort size: A duvet for two people should have a generous width. This way, both remain covered and no one has to freeze. The body size of the couple also plays a role. If both have a bit more weight on their bones, a wider comfort size or special size makes sense.
    • Different cold sensation: Does one person always have cold feet, while the partner is always warm? In this case, separate duvets can be very useful. This way, one can opt for warming winter duvets and the other can choose thinner summer duvets.

    Duvet Sizes for Children

For children, it is important to consider the age of the child when choosing the duvet size. These standard sizes have become established in Germany.

      • Babies: Babies up to two years old should sleep completely without a duvet. This poses a risk for the little ones, as they can get entangled in it or pull it over their heads and suffocate. This age group should only sleep with a sleeping bag.
  • Toddlers: From the age of two, you can get your child used to a duvet. The standard size here is 100 x 135 cm.
  • Children from 5 or 6 years: Eventually, the children's duvet becomes too small and the child will feel comfortable under a standard duvet of 135 x 200 cm. Give the child such a duvet to try for a few nights.

  • The most popular duvet sizes

You've read our article, but you're still unsure about the ideal duvet size? Perhaps an overview of the most commonly purchased duvets in this country will help you. By far the most frequently purchased is the standard size 135 x 200 cm (50 percent of purchases), followed by the extra-long comfort size 155 x 220 cm (25 percent). Duvets for couples (standard and extra-long) only account for 10 percent of purchases.

However, don't let these numbers unsettle you; consider your preferences, your body size, and your bed, and you are guaranteed to make the ideal choice for yourself.
