Brief Answer: To wash a down duvet, use a washing machine at 40–60 °C on a gentle cycle with liquid delicate detergent. Do not use fabric softener — it will clump the down and destroy its loft. After washing, thorough drying in a tumble dryer at a low temperature with 2–3 tennis balls is essential to re-fluff the down. The entire process takes 4–6 hours. BEFA down duvets are washable at 60 °C thanks to Oeko-Tex Class 1 covers.
Do you want to wash your down duvet but are unsure if it will survive? This concern is justified. Incorrect temperature, wrong detergent, or insufficient drying can cause the down to clump — and a clumped down duvet no longer insulates properly.
The good news is that with the right method, washing is straightforward. As a bedding manufacturer, we know what matters from production and the feedback of thousands of customers. This guide will take you step-by-step through the process — from preparation to washing and drying.

Preparation: Planning your down duvet wash correctly
Before putting your down duvet in the washing machine, check three things:
1. Read the care label
The care label indicates the maximum washing temperature and whether the duvet is machine washable. Most high-quality down duvets are washable at 40 °C. BEFA down duvets with Oeko-Tex Class 1 covers can tolerate 60 °C — an advantage for allergy sufferers and hygiene-conscious sleepers.
2. Check washing machine capacity
A down duvet measuring 135x200 cm requires at least a 7 kg drum. A 155x220 or 200x220 cm duvet needs 8–9 kg. If the drum is too small, the duvet cannot move freely — the detergent will not distribute evenly, and the down will clump.
3. Remove the cover and check for damage
Remove the duvet cover. Check the seams for holes or open areas. If down is escaping, repair the area before washing — otherwise, you will lose filling material in the machine.
The right washing temperature: 40 or 60 degrees?
The washing temperature for down duvets depends on the cover fabric and the down quality. The down itself can tolerate high temperatures — the critical factor is the cover fabric.
| Temperature | When suitable | Advantages |
|---|---|---|
| 30 °C | Light refresh, hardly soiled | Gentle, low risk |
| 40 °C | Standard cleaning, most down duvets | Removes sweat, skin oils, light stains |
| 60 °C | Allergy sufferers, kills dust mites, heavy soiling | Reliably kills mites and bacteria |
Why BEFA Down Duvets Tolerate 60 °C
Most down duvets on the market are only washable at 40 °C because the cover fabric cannot tolerate higher temperatures. Our down duvets use Oeko-Tex Standard 100 Class 1 certified cover fabrics — this is the strictest class, also applicable to baby textiles. These fabrics are designed for 60 °C without shrinking or losing their down-proofness.
From our production: In our quality control, we test the fill power (loft) after washing according to DIN EN 12132 — even after 10 washes at 60 °C. We only use the fabric if it does not allow any down to escape after the wash test. That's why we can recommend 60 °C — this is not a given for cheaper duvets.
The right detergent for down duvets
Detergent is the most common mistake when washing a down duvet. Many use regular heavy-duty detergent — this damages the down.
What you should use
- Liquid delicate detergent — dissolves completely and leaves no residue
- Special down detergent — contains re-fattening substances that preserve the natural oils of the down
- Dosage: A maximum of half the recommended amount. Too much detergent is difficult to rinse out from inside the down.
What you must NOT use
- Fabric softener: Clumps the down fibers and permanently destroys the loft
- Heavy-duty detergent (powder): Contains bleach and optical brighteners that attack the natural down oils
- Bleach: Irreversibly damages the down structure
Wash program and spinning
Select the gentle cycle program (also: delicate, wool, or down program). Two settings are important:
- Low spin speed: Maximum 400–600 revolutions per minute during spinning. Higher speeds can strain the baffle seams and damage the down.
- Extra rinse cycle: Set an additional rinse cycle. Detergent residues in the down chambers can lead to clumping and an unpleasant odor.
Step-by-step: Duvet into the machine
- Load duvet loosely: Do not stuff. The duvet must be able to move freely in the drum.
- Detergent in the dispenser: Liquid delicate detergent, half dosage.
- Start program: Gentle cycle, 40 °C (or 60 °C for BEFA duvets), 400–600 rpm.
- Extra rinse cycle: Let it rinse again after the main program.
Drying: The most important step
Drying determines whether your down duvet becomes fluffy again after washing — or remains flat and lumpy. Drying in a tumble dryer is mandatory. Air drying is not sufficient for down duvets.
Why a dryer is mandatory
Wet down clumps into compact lumps. When air drying, they remain in this state — the moisture dries, but the down does not separate. In the dryer, the down clusters are mechanically separated by the drum's movement and fluff up again.
How to dry correctly
- Set the dryer to a low temperature (max. 60 °C, preferably 40 °C)
- Add 2–3 clean tennis balls to the drum — they will beat the down during drying
- Multiple drying cycles: A down duvet requires 2–3 dryer cycles of 60–90 minutes each. In between, remove the duvet, shake it, and put it back in.
- Check for residual moisture: Squeeze the duvet. If the inside still feels cool and damp, it needs another cycle.
Important: A down duvet that is not completely dry can start to mold. The drying process takes a total of 3–5 hours. Plan for half a day.
From our production: In our quality control, we check the fill power after washing. A correctly washed and dried down duvet regains 95–100% of its original fill power after 24 hours. The key is the tennis balls and enough drying time. Stopping too early is the most common mistake.
Washing a down duvet: Methods compared
| Method | Washing machine (recommended) | Professional cleaning | Hand wash (bathtub) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cost | €1–3 (detergent + electricity) | €20–40 | €1–2 |
| Time expenditure | 4–6 hours (incl. dryer) | 3–7 days waiting time | 1–2 days (air drying) |
| Result | Very good with dryer | Very good | Moderate — high risk of clumping |
| Risk | Low with correct temperature | Very low | High — risk of mold |
| Recommendation | First choice | For uncertainty or luxury duvets | Not recommended |
The 5 most common mistakes when washing a down duvet
Mistake 1: Using fabric softener
Fabric softener coats the down fibers like a film. The down can no longer fluff up, the duvet becomes flat and loses its thermal performance. This damage is permanent — no dryer can undo it.
Mistake 2: Too much detergent
Down retains detergent residues inside the chambers. Even an extra rinse cycle won't remove everything if you've used too much. The residues can cause the down to clump and may smell musty. Half the dosage is the rule.
Mistake 3: Too high spin speed
At over 800 rpm, the down is pressed against the baffle seams. The fine down fibers can break, and the down loses volume. 400–600 rpm is perfectly sufficient.
Mistake 4: Air drying instead of tumble drying
Drying a down duvet on the line or a drying rack takes 2–3 days. During this time, mold can form — especially inside the duvet, where moisture remains longest. Furthermore, clumped down will not separate without the mechanical movement of the dryer.
Mistake 5: Washing too infrequently
Many people do not wash their down duvet for years. During this time, sweat, skin flakes, and mite droppings accumulate — even when using a duvet cover. Recommendation: Wash 1–2 times a year, ideally in spring and autumn during seasonal duvet changes.
Manufacturer Tips: Extend the lifespan of your down duvet
From 30 years of bedding production and the feedback of thousands of customers, we have derived five rules for caring for down duvets:
- Fluff daily: 30 seconds is enough. The down distributes evenly, and the night's moisture can escape.
- Aerate regularly: Every 2–4 weeks, hang the duvet outside on a balcony or out a window on dry days. Avoid direct sunlight — UV radiation attacks the cover fabric.
- Use a duvet cover: A duvet cover protects the duvet from sweat and dirt. It significantly extends the washing intervals.
- Store correctly: Store down duvets in a breathable cotton bag — never in plastic bags. Down needs air circulation, otherwise it can become musty.
- Know the lifespan: A high-quality down duvet lasts 10–15 years with good care. If the loft does not return despite washing and drying, it is time for a new duvet.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can you wash a down duvet in the washing machine?
Yes. Most down duvets can be washed in a washing machine with at least 7 kg capacity. Use liquid mild detergent, the delicate cycle at 40–60 °C, and a maximum spin speed of 600 rpm.
At what temperature should you wash a down duvet?
The standard washing temperature for down duvets is 40 °C. High-quality duvets with Oeko-Tex certified covers can also tolerate 60 °C – this is particularly recommended for allergy sufferers, as dust mites are killed at 60 °C.
Which detergent is suitable for down duvets?
Use liquid mild detergent or special down detergent at half the dosage. No heavy-duty detergent, no washing powder, no fabric softener. Fabric softener clogs the down and permanently destroys its loft.
How do you dry a down duvet after washing?
In a tumble dryer at a low temperature (max. 60 °C) with 2–3 clean tennis balls. Plan for 2–3 drying cycles. In between, remove the duvet and shake it up. Air drying alone is not sufficient – the down will clump together and there is a risk of mold.
How often should you wash a down duvet?
1–2 times a year is sufficient, preferably during the seasonal duvet change in spring and autumn. Always use a duvet cover – this extends washing intervals and protects the duvet from sweat and dirt.
Can fabric softener be used with down duvets?
No, never. Fabric softener forms a film around the down fibers, clogs them, and permanently destroys their loft. This damage cannot be reversed even by tumble drying with tennis balls.
Can a down duvet also be washed in the bathtub?
Technically possible, but not recommended. A wet down duvet weighs 8–12 kg and is difficult to wring out. Without a dryer, the down will clump together, and there is a high risk of mold. If your washing machine is too small, it's better to use a laundromat with large machines.
Can a down duvet smell musty after washing?
Yes, this happens with incomplete drying or too much detergent. Solution: Wash the duvet again with little detergent and this time dry it completely in the dryer. Check after each cycle if the inside is still damp.
