135x200 is the smallest widely used single duvet size in Germany. In summer, this format has two clear advantages: it fits into any household washing machine from 6 kg, and its filling quantity costs about 20% less than 155x220. However, it overhangs less on the sides, and those who toss and turn a lot at night are more likely to pull the duvet with them. This guide clarifies when 135x200 is the right decision for summer — and when it is not.
What 135x200 is really made for in summer
135x200 originally comes from the 1970s, when single beds with 90x200 mattresses were standard. Today, the format is particularly useful in three situations:
- Youth beds and training beds (80x200 and 90x200 mattress) — here, a 155x220 duvet would overhang so much that it hangs on the floor at the sides
- Small single bedrooms where the bed is directly against the wall and a larger overhang has no function
- Second beds in guest rooms, where a compact duvet takes up less space in the closet
135x200 is not suitable for people over 1.85 m tall, for restless sleepers, and for couples — even if they use separate duvets, 155x220 on an 180-cm bed is usually the better choice.
Body height and duvet length: The 30-cm rule
A summer duvet should be at least 15 cm longer than your body height, preferably 30 cm. The reason: at night, your head shifts to the pillow, the duvet slides up, and your feet become uncovered. With a duvet length of 200 cm and a body height of 1.75 m, there is a buffer of about 25 cm — which is just enough. At 1.85 m, it becomes tight; at 1.90 m, it's definitely too short.
Specifically:
- Up to 1.75 m — 135x200 works well in summer
- 1.75–1.85 m — 135x200 is acceptable, 155x220 offers more comfort
- Over 1.85 m — 155x220 or longer (200x220)
Mattress size: What suits 135x200?
The 135x200 format is explicitly designed for narrow single mattresses. The overhang calculation:
| Mattress Size | Overhang with 135x200 (per side) | Evaluation |
|---|---|---|
| 80x200 | 27.5 cm | Very good — classic youth bed combination |
| 90x200 | 22.5 cm | Good — standard single bed |
| 100x200 | 17.5 cm | Borderline — duvet slips more easily |
| 120x200 | 7.5 cm | Too tight — better 155x220 |
The rule of thumb: An overhang of less than 15 cm per side means that the duvet will be pulled along with every turn. If you are sleeping on a 100x200 mattress, you should seriously consider the 155x220 option.
Duvet Cover Compatibility: What's available on the market
In Germany, 135x200, along with 155x220, is the most commonly used single size — duvet covers in this format can be found in almost every assortment. The difference with IKEA and designer duvet covers:
- German manufacturers (Bassetti, Janine, Estella, Fleuresse): 135x200 is a standard SKU — wide selection
- IKEA: Carries 140x200 as standard. 135x200 duvets fit slightly looser, without tension — it works
- International brands (Scandinavian, French): Often only 140x200 or 150x210 — it's worth checking the dimensions before buying
For 80x80 or 40x80 pillows, there is no restriction — all standard duvet cover sets include matching pillowcases.
Filling quantity and fill weight for 135x200
The area of a 135x200 duvet is 2.70 m², which is 21% less than 155x220 (3.41 m²). We reduce the filling quantity proportionally — a 135x200 summer duvet with 350g of down has the same fill power per square meter as a 155x220 with 445g. Many providers simply use the 400g standard weight without calculating for the area.
| Temperature Range | Down Fill | Primaloft Bio Fill |
|---|---|---|
| Tropical nights above 24 °C | 200 g | 280 g |
| Standard Summer 18–24 °C | 300–350 g | 380–420 g |
| Transitional period 15–19 °C | 450 g | 520 g |
Primaloft Bio is heavier per unit volume than down — this explains the higher gram figures for the same thermal performance.
Which filling for 135x200? Material decision based on sleep type
The compact format works with all summer materials we produce. The choice depends on sleeping habits:
Pure Goose Down — for temperature-sensitive sleepers
The lightest option. Pure Down Duvet 100% Down Summer regulates temperature and humidity on both sides — dry in summer, even when the duvet is close to the body. Recommended for people who get warm during sleep but don't want moisture on their skin.
Tencel Down — for those who sweat
The Tencel Goose Down Duvet Summer combines a down filling with a Tencel Lyocell cover. The cover absorbs up to 50% more moisture than cotton and releases it into the room air. This is the top recommendation for those who sweat. More on the material question in the guide Down or Tencel?
Primaloft Bio — vegan, washable at 60 °C
The Clima Primaloft Bio Summer Duvet is the choice for allergy sufferers and anyone who doesn't want animal filling. Fully washable at 60 °C, tumble dryer safe, antibacterial finish. Often the pragmatic choice for youth beds because it's easier to care for.
135x200 or 155x220? The clear decision aid
The majority of customers who have to decide between the two sizes ultimately choose 155x220 — because the extra 20 cm in length and 20 cm in width actually provide a noticeable increase in comfort. 135x200 remains sensible if one of the following situations applies:
- The bed is a genuine single bed (80x200, 90x200) — in this case, 155x220 would fall off the side of the bed
- The household washing machine is 6 kg — 155x220 is already a tight fit, 135x200 fits comfortably
- Teenager's room, children's room, guest room — here, practicality, not maximum comfort, is key
- Limited wardrobe volume — 135x200 saves about 3 liters of wardrobe volume when folded compared to 155x220
Anyone sleeping in a standard single bed with a 140x200 mattress should opt for 155x220 — the few extra centimeters of overhang result in less comfort loss than pulling the duvet around during the night.
Care: 135x200 is the most washing-friendly format
Of all BEFA summer duvets, 135x200 is the easiest to care for. Reasons:
- Fits in 6 kg washing machines — the 200x200 variant requires at least 8 kg
- Dries faster — less surface area, less filling, about 90 minutes in the dryer instead of 120 for 155x220
- Easy to fluff up — less effort than with larger formats
Washing temperature remains material-dependent: down and Tencel-down at 60 °C on a delicate cycle, Primaloft Bio at 60 °C on a normal cycle. Complete instructions in the guide Washing a Summer Duvet.
What BEFA does differently
The 135x200 format in our production uses a 5×5 baffle box construction with 25 chambers. Larger formats like 155x220 have 6×6 (36 chambers), 200x200 has 7×7 (49 chambers). The number of chambers is adapted to the duvet — a general quilting would cause the filling to clump in corners. This is why cheap duvets are full in one corner and flat in another after six months. For 135x200, the 5×5 division means that each chamber contains about 14 g of down — small enough that the filling cannot shift within the chamber. For each duvet, all 25 chambers are individually filled and weighed, with a tolerance of ±15 g from the target weight. This is more complex in terms of production than a single large chamber, but it prevents the most common wear problem.
Conclusion: Pragmatic when the size fits
135x200 is not a compromise size, but a specific solution for narrow single beds, small bedrooms, and pragmatic care requirements. The area is one-fifth smaller than 155x220, the filling quantity is adjusted accordingly, and the weight is lower — all advantages as long as the bed is truly narrow and the sleeper is under 1.85 m tall. In all other cases, the 155x220 decision is worthwhile. The complete selection can be found in the summer duvet collection, especially the 2-piece set variants in Pure Down 2-piece set and Primaloft Bio 2-piece set for couples who prefer separate duvets.
