155x220 cm is, alongside 135x200 cm, the most common size for single duvets in Germany — and often the better choice for summer duvets. The additional 20 centimeters in length and 20 centimeters in width solve two typical problems: cold feet for tall sleepers and shoulder overhang when the duvet slips during turning. This guide explains why 155x220 has become so popular, when other sizes are a better fit, and which summer duvet variants are available in 155x220.
German Duvet Sizes: The System
In Germany, two single standard sizes have become established over decades: 135x200 cm as the basic size and 155x220 cm as the "oversize". Internationally, this is not the case — 150x210 is common in Scandinavia, 200x200 in France, and 135x200 and 200x200 in Great Britain. Anyone looking for bedding in Germany will find the widest selection in these two sizes. This is the first practical reason why 155x220 is so popular: matching duvet covers are available in every bedding store, online shop, and department store.
The second reason is ergonomic. 135x200 cm is sufficient for sleepers up to about 1.75 m — the duvet then ends approximately at the feet. Taller individuals will have a constant problem with the smaller size: shoulders or feet become exposed during the night. 155x220 provides enough leeway in both directions: 20 cm more in length, 20 cm more in width.
When 155x220 is the Right Choice
This size is worthwhile in several scenarios:
- Body height from 1.80 m: With 135x200, the duvet slips down at the top for tall sleepers when pulled up or leaves their feet exposed. 155x220 solves this permanently.
- Side sleepers who turn a lot: Those who change their sleeping position multiple times during the night will push the duvet aside. More width = more tolerance.
- Single person in a wide bed (140 cm or wider): A 135 duvet looks too small on a 140 cm bed. 155x220 fits better into the overall picture.
- People who like to "wrap themselves in the duvet": Those who like to roll up completely need side overhang. 155x220 provides this.
- Box spring beds: The higher mattress makes the duvet appear visually shorter. 155x220 compensates for this.
When 135x200 is Sufficient
Not everyone needs the larger format:
- Body height under 1.75 m and a calm sleeper.
- Standard bed 90x200 or 100x200 — here 135x200 is ergonomically suitable.
- Those who frequently change covers and prefer easier laundry handling.
Size Comparison: 135x200 vs. 155x220 vs. 200x200

|---|---|---|---|
| For body height | up to 1.75 m | 1.75–1.95 m | Couple duvet |
| Typical fill weight summer duvet (down) | Approx. 350 g | Approx. 500 g | Approx. 650 g |
| Matching duvet covers | Widely available | Widely available | Available |

| Handling (covering, washing) | Very easy | Easy | More effort |
Fill Weight: The Trap with Larger Duvets
A mistake many people make when upgrading sizes: they buy 155x220 with the same fill weight as 135x200. The result is a thin, flat-looking duvet where the body "breaks through". The fill weight must be scaled proportionally to the area.
Calculation: 135x200 = 2.7 m² area. 155x220 = 3.41 m² area. That's about 26% more. Accordingly, the fill weight should increase. For a summer down duvet, this means: if 350 g worked well for 135x200, you'll need closer to 450–500 g for 155x220 to get the same sleeping sensation.
Which Summer Duvets are Available in 155x220?
Most high-quality summer duvets are offered in at least three sizes, and 155x220 cm is almost always among them. At BEFA, the entire range of summer duvets is available in this format:
- Tencel Goose Down Duvet 90% Summer — Down filling in a Tencel cover
- Clima Primaloft Bio Summer Duvet — vegan, washable variant
- Pure Down Duvet 100% Down Summer — classic premium version
- Natur Exklusiv Clima 90% Goose Down Summer — climate duvet with box quilting
- Camel Hair Duvet Summer — niche material with strong moisture regulation
The complete selection can be found in the Summer Duvet Collection.
Bed Linen Offerings in 155x220
The availability of bed linen in 155x220 is one of the main reasons why this size has persisted — and why deviations (e.g., 150x210 from Scandinavia) are rarely chosen in Germany. Standard assortments in 155x220 include:
- Cotton renforcé (most affordable standard)
- Cotton sateen (more elegant, slightly cooler on the skin)
- Jersey (soft, stretchy, slightly warmer)
- Linen (ideal for summer — cool, breathable)
- Percale (tightly woven, robust, wrinkle-resistant)
- Silk, Tencel (premium segment)
If you choose 135x200 or one of the international deviations, you will also find covers, but with a significantly narrower selection. This is a practical point that will be noticeable again and again over the lifetime of a duvet.
Other Summer Duvet Sizes at a Glance
135x200 — the Small Standard
Optimal for single sleepers under 1.75 m in a 90x200 or 100x200 bed. More details in the guide Summer Duvet 135x200.
200x200 / 200x220 — the Couple's Duvet
For two people under one duvet. The question is whether this is ideal from a sleep physiology perspective (different body temperatures) or whether two single summer duvets work better. Details in the guide Summer Duvet 200x200.
240x220 — the Oversize
For box spring beds of 180x200 or larger, or very tall sleepers. Bed linen becomes scarcer, prices rise significantly.
Purchase Criteria Specifically for 155x220
When upgrading sizes, two additional checks are worthwhile:
- Box quilting: For larger duvets, the quilting becomes more important. A simply stitched 155x220 down duvet has larger areas — the filling migrates to the corners. Box quilting with inner baffles keeps the filling in place.
- Corner reinforcement and seams: The larger format means more material tension at the corners and edges. Double seams and reinforced corners are not a luxury for this size, but a must for a lifespan of 10+ years.
Care for Large Summer Duvets
A 155x220 summer duvet, when washed and wet, can easily weigh twice its dry weight. This is where a normal household washing machine (7 kg) reaches its limit. For down fillings, the drum must truly offer enough space for the duvet to unfold in the water – otherwise, soap will remain in the filling.
- At least 8 kg drum volume (generally applies to 155x220 down duvets).
- For very large duvets: take them to a professional laundry once a season – this is often cheaper than overtaxing your machine at home.
- When drying: use tennis balls or dryer balls, and dry completely. If you put the filling back into bed while still damp, you'll have a lumpy clump instead of a duvet within days.

Common Mistakes When Buying a 155x220 Summer Duvet
- Buying the same fill weight as 135x200: The result is a thin, flat duvet. Fill quantity must scale with area.
- Washing machine too small: If you want to wash the duvet at home, you need at least an 8 kg drum – otherwise, the water won't clean through properly.
- Underestimating quilting: Simply stitched down duvets in 155x220 will migrate more to the corners than smaller formats. Box quilting is more important for this size than for 135x200.
- Ordering the wrong bedding size: 155x220 is not a special format, but some international online shops don't include it in their main assortment. Check cover availability in your preferred design beforehand.
Why 155x220 Production is More Demanding
For us as a manufacturer, each size represents its own production run – cutting, quilting, filling, seam finishing. 155x220 is not simply "the same, just larger." The quilting patterns must be adjusted, the fill weight re-measured, and the seams dimensioned accordingly. At BEFA, each 155x220 summer duvet is individually filled and weighed. This prevents one duvet from containing more filling than another from the same batch – a problem that occurs with general machine dosing.
The inners are produced with box quilting, so the filling remains evenly distributed even after years and many washes. Corners are double-stitched. The covers are Öko-Tex certified. Down comes from Downpass-certified European farming – no live-plucking, no force-feeding origin.
Conclusion: Who is 155x220 Right For?
The short answer: If you are taller than 1.75 m, turn a lot in your sleep, have a bed 120 cm wide or more, or simply love more duvet coverage — then 155x220 is the better choice compared to 135x200. The extra centimeters are not a luxury, but functional. It's only important that the fill weight increases with the size — otherwise, you'll end up buying a larger but inferior duvet. You can find the full selection of summer duvets in 155x220 in the Summer Duvet Collection. An overview of materials is available in the Summer Duvet Material Guide.
What BEFA Does Differently
For 155x220, we use a 6x6 box quilting (36 chambers). Smaller formats like 135x200 have 5x5 (25 chambers), larger 200x200 have 7x7 (49 chambers). The number of chambers is adapted to the duvet — a general quilting would cause the filling to clump in the corners. This is why cheap duvets end up full in one corner and flat in the other after six months.
