Duvet 240x220: Oversized for King-Size Beds

Reviewed by BEFA Expert Editorial Team — Bedding Manufacturer since 1994

Brief Answer: A duvet 240×220 cm is the largest standard size on the German market. It is designed for King-Size beds from 200 cm width and offers 120 cm of duvet width per person — significantly more than the 100 cm of a 200×220 partner duvet. BEFA Limburg manufactures all down duvets in 240×220 in Germany — with box stitching, Oeko-Tex Standard 100, and Downpass certification.

You have a king-size bed — or are planning one. The mattress is 200×200 cm or even wider. Now you need a duvet that actually covers this bed without you pulling the covers off each other at night.

The answer is 240×220 cm. But what does this size specifically mean? Which filling works for such a large duvet? And is it even worth it, or are two single duvets a better solution? This guide answers all questions — from the perspective of a manufacturer who has been producing these duvets for 30 years.

Who is a 240×220 duvet for?

The 240×220 cm duvet is not a niche product — it is the logical answer to a growing trend. King-size beds with 200×200 cm or 200×220 cm mattresses are becoming increasingly popular in Germany. And a wide bed needs a wide duvet.

Specifically, 240×220 is the right choice in three situations:

  • King-size bed from 200 cm wide: A 200×220 duvet does not overhang a 200 cm wide bed — it lies flush with the mattress. This looks unfinished and offers no side protection against cold air. The 240 cm width creates a 20 cm overhang per side — just right.
  • Couples who need a lot of space: With 120 cm of duvet width per person, you have almost as much space as under your own single duvet (135 cm). This significantly reduces "duvet hogging."
  • Individuals in wide beds: Those who sleep alone in a wide bed and like to wrap themselves in the duvet benefit from the generous dimensions.

Size comparison: 200×220 vs. 240×220 vs. two single duvets

Three options are available when furnishing a king-size bed. Each has advantages and disadvantages — here's an honest comparison.

Criterion 200×220 cm 240×220 cm 2 × 155×220 cm
Ideal bed width 180 cm 200 cm and wider 180–200 cm
Width per person 100 cm 120 cm 155 cm
Overhang (200 bed) 0 cm (flush) 20 cm per side 55 cm overlap each
Individual warmth needs Not possible Not possible Different warmth classes possible
Bed linen selection Good Limited Good (155×220 is comfort size)
Washing machine From 8 kg drum From 9 kg drum From 7 kg drum
Look in bed Snug, no overhang Luxurious, even overhang "Visitor's gap" in the middle

Our assessment: If your bed is 200 cm or wider and you want to sleep under a shared duvet as a couple, 240×220 is the best choice. If you have different warmth needs, two single duvets in 155×220 (comfort size) are still better — no matter how wide the bed is.

Which filling suits the oversized duvet?

For a 240×220 duvet, the choice of filling becomes even more important than for smaller sizes. The reason is simple: more surface area means more filling material and thus more weight. A heavy synthetic duvet of this size can weigh over 3.5 kg — you'll feel that when you sleep.

Down (90% down content) — our recommendation for 240×220

Down is the clear first choice for oversized duvets. A down duvet in 240×220 as an all-season duvet weighs only 1,300–1,500 g of filling weight — with excellent thermal performance. Two bodies under a large duvet generate a lot of moisture — down regulates this better than any synthetic filling.

Goose down — maximum lightness

Goose down has larger clusters and thus higher fill power than duck down. This is particularly noticeable in a duvet of this size: A goose down duvet 240×220 can be 200–300 g lighter than a duck down duvet with the same thermal performance. On a surface area of over 5 m², you will clearly feel the weight difference.

Synthetic (Microfiber / Primaloft)

Synthetic fillings are cheaper and easier to care for. For a 240×220 duvet, however, you must expect a weight of 2,500–3,500 g. This can be uncomfortable for some sleepers — especially in summer. Advantage: Synthetic can be washed at 60 °C and dries faster. If Primaloft is used as a filling, the weight is slightly reduced with better thermal performance.

From our production: For the 240×220 size, we exclusively use European Class 1 down with at least 90% down content. Class 1 means: the down is particularly large and fluffy, which ensures even heat distribution in such a large duvet. Cheap down with a high feather content would quickly clump in a 240×220 — the area is simply too large for inferior material.

Why quilting is particularly important for 240×220

For an oversized duvet, the quilting determines durability and sleeping comfort. The large surface area amplifies every design flaw — what is tolerable in a 135×200 duvet becomes a problem in a 240×220.

Box quilting with internal baffles — mandatory

With box quilting, the individual chambers are connected by fabric baffles. The down can fluff freely within each box, but cannot migrate into the neighboring box. This is crucial for a surface area of over 5 m² — without internal baffles, the down would migrate into the corners and edges within a few weeks.

Channel quilting — not recommended

With channel quilting (the cover is stitched directly through), cold spots are created at every seam. For a 240×220 duvet with, for example, 6×8 boxes, this means over 7 meters of seam length — all potential points of heat loss. This may be tolerable for a summer duvet, but not for an all-season or winter duvet.

BEFA Manufacturer Tip: When buying a 240×220 down duvet, pay attention to the baffle height. At BEFA, we use internal baffles of 6–8 cm height for winter duvets, and 3–5 cm for all-season duvets. Higher baffles allow the down more loft — the duvet is warmer with the same filling weight. For a 240×220, this effect accumulates over the entire surface.

Practical tips: washing, drying, bedding

A 240×220 duvet places special demands on care and equipment. Here are the most important points from our experience:

Washing

You need a washing machine with a minimum drum volume of 9 kg. This is larger than standard household machines (7–8 kg). If your machine is smaller, use a laundromat with large drums or take the duvet for professional wet cleaning (no dry cleaning — this destroys the natural oils of the down).

Wash at a maximum of 60 °C on a delicate cycle with liquid mild detergent. Do not use fabric softener. Program a second rinse cycle to ensure all detergent residues are washed out — otherwise, with this duvet size, detergent will remain in the filling.

Drying

In the dryer at low temperature (max. 60 °C) with 2–3 tennis balls. Plan 4–5 drying cycles — a 240×220 down duvet takes significantly longer than a single duvet. In between, remove the duvet, shake it out, and fluff the down by hand. You can find more on this topic in our guide to drying down duvets.

Important: Air drying is not an option for a 240×220 duvet. The drying time would be so long that the down would clump and there would be a risk of mold. The German Environment Agency also warns against mold growth due to prolonged moisture in textiles. A dryer is mandatory.

Finding bed linen

240×220 cm is less common in Germany than 200×200 or 200×220. The selection of bed linen is therefore more limited. Tips:

  • Scandinavian manufacturers often carry 240×220 — this size is more common in Sweden and Denmark.
  • Custom-made from specialized providers is an option if you want specific fabrics or colors.
  • Alternatively: Look for 220×240 bedding — it's the same size, just stated differently (width × length instead of length × width).

Manufacturer Tip: Many customers order 240×220 and then desperately look for suitable bedding. Our advice: Clarify bedding availability before purchasing the duvet. BEFA offers its own bedding in 240×220 — Made in Germany, matching our duvets.

Manufacturer Tips from BEFA Production

As a manufacturer, we see daily what mistakes are made when buying an oversized duvet. Here are three tips to save you money and trouble:

  1. Don't skimp on the filling: A cheap down duvet in 240x220 with a high feather content loses its loft after 1–2 years. The large surface area amplifies the effect — the feathers break down faster and clump together. Invest in at least 90% down content.
  2. Buy bedding before the duvet: Or at least verify that your desired bedding is available in 240x220. Nothing is more frustrating than a premium duvet without suitable bedding.
  3. Check your washing machine: A 240x220 down duvet requires at least 9 kg drum volume. If your machine is smaller, plan regular trips to the laundromat — or invest in a larger machine.

Frequently Asked Questions

What size duvet is for a King-Size bed?

For a king-size bed with a 200×200 cm mattress, we recommend a 240×220 cm duvet. This size provides a 20 cm overhang per side and 120 cm duvet width per person. A 200×220 cm duvet would be too narrow for a 200 cm wide bed — it would be flush with the mattress without any side overhang.

Is 240x220 a standard size?

Yes, 240×220 cm is the largest standard size on the German bedding market. It is standardized and available from quality manufacturers. However, the selection of bedding is smaller than for 200×220 or 200×200 cm.

How heavy is a 240x220 down duvet?

A high-quality 240×220 all-season down duvet with 90% down content weighs approx. 1,300–1,500 g fill weight. The total weight with cover fabric is approx. 2.0–2.5 kg. For comparison: a synthetic duvet of the same size weighs 3.0–3.5 kg.

Does a 240x220 duvet fit in the washing machine?

Only in washing machines with at least 9 kg drum volume. Standard household machines (7–8 kg) are too small. Alternatives: laundromats with large drums or professional wet cleaning. Washing machines with 9+ kg drums are now available from many manufacturers.

How much does a good 240x220 duvet cost?

A high-quality 240×220 down duvet with 90% down content costs between 250 and 450 Euros — depending on the filling (duck or goose down) and warmth class. Synthetic alternatives start from 100–150 Euros. At BEFA, you can get 240×220 down duvets from €169.95.

240x220 or two single duvets — which is better?

240×220 is better if both partners sleep at a similar temperature, sleep soundly, and appreciate sharing a duvet. Two single duvets are better if warmth needs, sleep rhythms, or material preferences differ. For allergies (one partner needs a washable duvet), two single duvets are a must.

Is 240x220 also available as a summer duvet?

Yes. BEFA offers all warmth classes in 240×220 — summer duvet (light, approx. 600–800 g filling), transitional duvet, all-season duvet, and winter duvet. The 240×220 summer down duvet weighs under 2 kg and is ideal for warm bedrooms above 20 °C.

Which bedding fits 240x220?

Look for bedding in 240×220 cm or 220×240 cm — both are the same size. The selection in Germany is more limited than for standard sizes. Scandinavian manufacturers (e.g., IKEA) and specialized suppliers have the largest selection. BEFA offers its own bedding in this size.
