Short Answer: The standard size for single beds in Germany is 135×200 cm. For people 180 cm tall or more, the comfort size 155×220 cm is recommended. Double beds use 200×200 cm (for people up to 180 cm tall) or 200×220 cm (for people 180 cm tall or more). The oversized 240×220 cm is for extra-wide beds with mattress widths of 200 cm or more. BEFA produces all five standard sizes — in every filling and warmth class.
You pull the blanket over your shoulder — and suddenly your feet are exposed. Or you share a blanket with your partner and fight for fabric at night. Duvet size problems are one of the most common reasons for poor sleep — and at the same time, the easiest to solve.
Nevertheless, most people buy their duvet in the size they’ve always had. 135×200 cm — because it’s the standard. But perhaps their body has changed, the bed has gotten bigger, or a partner has joined them.
As a bedding manufacturer, BEFA has been producing duvets in all common sizes since 1994. In this guide, we explain which size fits which bed and body height — with specific recommendations and a clear table.

The five standard sizes at a glance
135×200 cm — the German standard
The size 135×200 cm is the best-selling duvet size in Germany. It fits single beds with mattress widths of 90–100 cm and is suitable for people up to approximately 175 cm tall. The duvet hangs about 20 cm over the mattress on both sides — enough to snuggle up without too much fabric on the floor.
For children and teenagers up to 170 cm, 135×200 cm is the ideal size. Most adults also sleep well with it — as long as they are not significantly taller than 175 cm. Learn more in our 135×200 Down Duvet Buying Guide.
155×220 cm — the comfort dimension
The comfort size is 20 cm wider and 20 cm longer than the standard. That may sound like a small difference, but it makes a noticeable impact: more overhang on the sides, no exposed feet, more freedom of movement when turning.
We recommend 155×220 cm for people 175 cm tall or more, for restless sleepers who move a lot at night, and for anyone who likes the feeling of being completely covered. Detailed information can be found in the 155×220 Guide.
200×200 cm — the standard shared duvet
200×200 cm is the standard double bed size for couples with a mattress width of 160–180 cm. The duvet is wide enough for two people and hangs over on both sides. The length of 200 cm is sufficient for couples where both partners are no taller than 180 cm.
Advantage over separate single duvets: No cold spot in the middle, uniform sleeping sensation, less laundry (one duvet instead of two). Disadvantage: If one partner pulls the duvet away in their sleep, the other suffers. Read details in the Double Bed Guide.
200×220 cm — the comfort shared duvet
Like 200×200, but 20 cm longer. We recommend this size for couples where at least one partner is taller than 180 cm. The extra length prevents feet from becoming exposed when turning or stretching.
200×220 cm is increasingly becoming the new standard for double beds — especially in hotels and high-end accommodations. BEFA offers this size in all fillings.
240×220 cm — the oversized duvet
The largest standard size for beds with mattress widths of 200 cm or more (King-Size). 240×220 cm offers maximum overhang on both sides and is the right choice for extra-wide beds where two people need a lot of space.
Please note: For this size, you will need a washing machine with at least 10 kg drum capacity or a laundromat. Bed linen in 240×220 cm is rarer and often more expensive than standard sizes.

Choosing duvet size according to body height
The length of the duvet is more important than its width. The rule of thumb: The duvet should be at least 20 cm longer than your body height. Why? When you turn on your side or draw up your knees, you use up length. A duvet that is too short will expose your feet.
Recommendation by body height:
- Up to 160 cm: 135×200 cm is perfectly sufficient
- 160–175 cm: 135×200 cm works, 155×220 cm is more comfortable
- 175–185 cm: 155×220 cm recommended — the 200 cm standard length will be tight
- 185–195 cm: 155×220 cm (single bed) or 200×220 cm (double bed) strongly recommended
- Over 195 cm: 220 cm length is a must. Choose 155×220 or 200×220 cm
From our production: We have observed a clear trend towards the comfort size 155×220 cm for years. More and more customers are switching from the standard 135×200 — even if they are under 175 cm tall. The reason: The larger duvet simply offers more comfort when turning and wrapping oneself, without a significant increase in weight.
Single bed: 135×200 or 155×220?
The decision between standard and comfort size depends on three factors:
Body height: From 175 cm, a 200 cm duvet becomes tight. Not when lying flat — 200 cm is mathematically sufficient. But as soon as you turn, pull the duvet over your shoulders, or bend your legs, your feet become exposed.
Sleeping habits: Calm sleepers get along well with 135×200. Those who move a lot at night benefit from the additional 20 cm width and length.
Bed linen availability: 135×200 cm is the standard — bed linen is widely available. For 155×220 cm, the selection is smaller, but all relevant manufacturers carry this size.
Our tip: If you are unsure, choose the larger option. A duvet that is too large is never a problem — one that is too small is.
Double bed: Shared duvet or separate duvets?
The question "one large duvet or two individual ones?" is one of the most frequent in bedding advice. Both options have pros and cons:
Shared duvet (200×200 or 200×220 cm):
- No cold spot in the middle
- Uniform sleeping sensation, more closeness
- Less laundry and bed-making
- Disadvantage: If one partner pulls the duvet, the other suffers
- Disadvantage: Different warmth preferences cannot be addressed individually
Two individual duvets (135×200 or 155×220 cm each):
- Everyone can choose their preferred warmth class and filling
- No "duvet hogging" — everyone has their own
- Different warmth needs can be addressed individually
- Disadvantage: Cold spot in the middle
- Disadvantage: Looks less tidy visually
The trend in the German market clearly leans towards separate duvets. This is also our recommendation if partners sleep at different temperatures or one is restless at night.

View nowOversized 240×220: When is it worth it?
The oversized 240×220 cm duvet is intended for beds with a mattress width of 200 cm or more — so-called King-Size beds. It offers 20 cm more overhang on each side than the standard 200×220 size.
When the oversized duvet is useful:
- Your bed has a mattress width of 200 cm or more
- Both partners want a shared duvet with maximum comfort
- You like to wrap yourself up generously
Keep in mind with the oversized duvet:
- Washing machine: At least 10 kg drum capacity, preferably 12 kg or a laundromat
- Bed linen: Less selection than standard sizes, often only available through specialist retailers
- Weight: A 240×220 down duvet weighs between 700–1,800 g filling weight, depending on the warmth class
From our production: BEFA is one of the few German manufacturers that offers all five standard sizes in every filling — from summer duvets to winter duvets, from down duvets to Primaloft variants. We produce all sizes in the same factory in Limburg, using the same materials and the same quality control according to Oeko-Tex Standard 100.
Finding bedding: Pay attention to size
The duvet size determines the bed linen size — and thus the selection. Not all bed linen manufacturers carry all sizes:
- 135×200 cm: Maximum selection. Every manufacturer, every supermarket, every online shop
- 155×220 cm: Good selection in specialist shops and online. Supermarkets rarely carry this size
- 200×200 cm: Readily available, but smaller selection than 135×200
- 200×220 cm: Available in specialist shops. German manufacturers like Fleuresse or Estella carry this size as standard
- 240×220 cm: Limited selection. Often only available through specialist retailers or specialized providers
Our tip: Before buying a new duvet, check if your existing bed linen fits. If you switch from 135×200 to 155×220, you will need new covers.
Frequently asked questions
What is the standard duvet size in Germany?
135×200 cm is the German standard size for single beds. For double beds, there is no uniform standard — 200×200, 200×220, and two individual 135×200 duvets are common.
What duvet size do I need if I am 180 cm tall?
If you are 180 cm tall, we recommend at least 155×220 cm. While the standard length of 200 cm is mathematically sufficient, it becomes tight as soon as you turn or pull the duvet over your shoulders.
Does a 155×220 duvet fit in regular bed linen?
No. A 155×220 duvet requires bed linen in exactly that size. 135×200 covers are too small. Most brand manufacturers offer bed linen in 155×220, but the selection in supermarkets is limited.
What size for an 180×200 bed?
For a bed with an 180×200 cm sleeping surface, we recommend either a shared duvet in 200×200 cm (or 200×220 cm for body heights over 180 cm) or two individual duvets in 135×200 cm or 155×220 cm.
Are there duvets in special sizes?
BEFA produces in the five standard sizes 135×200, 155×220, 200×200, 200×220 and 240×220 cm. Special sizes outside of these dimensions are possible on request, but are associated with longer delivery times and higher costs.
Is a larger duvet automatically warmer?
No. The thermal performance of a duvet depends on the filling weight per square meter, not on the total size. A summer duvet in 200×220 is just as light and cool as one in 135×200 — it just has proportionally more filling to cover the larger area.
What duvet size for children?
For babies and toddlers, we recommend special children's duvets in 80×80 cm or 100×135 cm. From school age, children can switch to the adult size 135×200 cm. Our baby and children's duvet is specially designed for the needs of small children.
200×200 or 200×220 — which double duvet is better?
If both partners are under 180 cm tall, 200×200 cm is sufficient. If at least one is taller, we recommend 200×220 cm. The price difference is small, the gain in comfort noticeable. When in doubt: choose larger.
