Duvets for Children: Size, Material, and Safety

Reviewed by BEFA Editorial Team — Bedding manufacturer since 1994

Short answer: The standard children's duvet is 100×135 cm and fits into any standard children's bed. Three things are important: Oeko-Tex Standard 100 Class 1 (strictest pollutant testing for babies and toddlers), washability at at least 60 °C (hygiene), and a low weight (otherwise children cannot move freely). High-quality children's duvets with down filling are light, temperature-regulating, and grow with the child in the right size — from toddler age to about 6 years old.

Parents spend hours choosing the right crib, mattress, and sleeping bag. But when it comes to the duvet, many opt for the first best option at the drugstore. Yet, the duvet is the product your child feels directly on their skin every night — for 10 to 12 hours.

The right children's duvet is not a luxury. It is a matter of safety (pollutants, risk of suffocation with overly heavy blankets), hygiene (children sweat more and duvets need frequent washing), and sleep comfort (children regulate their body temperature less effectively than adults).

As a bedding manufacturer, we have been producing children's duvets in Germany since 1994. This guide explains what truly matters — and what you can safely do without.

The right size: 80×80 cm vs. 100×135 cm

There are two standard sizes for children's duvets:

  • 80×80 cm: For babies and toddlers up to approx. 2 years old. Fits in cradles, co-sleepers, and small cribs. Often used as a playmat or blanket in a stroller.
  • 100×135 cm: The standard children's duvet. Fits all standard cribs (70×140 cm) and is used from toddler age (approx. 2 years) to school age (approx. 6–8 years).

Our recommendation: Switch directly to 100×135 cm as soon as your child transitions from a sleeping bag to a duvet. The 80×80 cm blanket quickly becomes too small and needs to be replaced soon. The 100×135 cm blanket will accompany your child for several years.

Size Age Bed size Area of use
80×80 cm 0–2 years Cradle, co-sleeper Blanket, stroller, playmat
100×135 cm 2–8 years Crib 70×140 cm Main duvet in crib
135×200 cm From approx. 6–8 years Youth bed 90×200 cm First adult duvet

Safety: Certifications that matter

For children's duvets, safety comes before everything else. Two certifications are non-negotiable:

Oeko-Tex Standard 100 — Class 1

The Oeko-Tex Standard 100 tests textiles for harmful substances. Class 1 is the strictest level — it applies to products that come into contact with baby skin. Among other things, it tests for:

  • Formaldehyde, pesticides, and heavy metals
  • Allergenic dyes
  • Chlorinated phenols
  • pH value (must be skin-friendly)

Important: Oeko-Tex Class 2 or 3 is not sufficient for children's duvets. Explicitly look for Class 1 — the testing criteria are significantly stricter. Every children's duvet that touches your child's skin directly should carry this certificate.

Downpass (for down filling)

If you choose a down children's duvet, look for the Downpass. This certifies that no down from live-plucking or force-feeding was used. This is not only an ethical question — down from ethically raised animals also has higher quality and filling power.

From our production: All our baby and children's duvets are certified with Oeko-Tex Standard 100 Class 1. This is not a given in our industry — many inexpensive children's duvets only carry Class 2 or no Oeko-Tex seal at all. Class 1 testing is more complex and expensive, but non-negotiable for baby skin.

Which material for the children's duvet?

Down and feathers

Down is the lightest natural filling material and regulates the sleeping climate best. Particularly important for children: Children sweat more at night than adults because their temperature regulation is not yet fully developed. A down duvet actively wicks away this moisture.

Children's duvets are often filled with a mixture of 60% down and 40% feathers. This results in a good balance of lightness, climate regulation, and price. Read more about the difference in our guide Goose down vs. Duck down.

Microfiber with Aloe Vera

Microfiber children's duvets are the most affordable option and washable at 60 °C. For families looking for an easy-care, uncomplicated blanket, they are a solid choice. However, climate regulation is worse than with down — children who sweat heavily sleep better under down.

Cotton

Cotton children's duvets are breathable and washable at high temperatures. However, they are heavier than down or microfiber duvets. This can be problematic for very small children — the blanket should be light enough for the child to easily push it away.

How heavy should a children's duvet be?

The weight of a children's duvet is a safety aspect, not a comfort detail. A duvet that is too heavy can prevent small children from moving freely or pushing the duvet away independently.

As a rule of thumb for the size 100×135 cm:

  • Maximum 500 g total weight for toddlers (1–3 years)
  • Maximum 700 g total weight for preschool children (3–6 years)
  • Maximum 1,000 g total weight for school-aged children (from 6 years)

Down duvets have a clear advantage here: For the same thermal capacity, they are significantly lighter than microfiber or cotton. A down children's duvet typically weighs only 300–400 g including the cover — light enough for any age.

Manufacturer's Tip: Pay attention not only to the filling weight, but to the total weight of the duvet (filling + cover). A heavy cotton cover can negate the benefits of a light filling. Our children's duvets use light cotton percale covers that keep the total weight low.

Washing and care: What's important

Children's duvets are washed more frequently than adult duvets — that's normal. Children sweat more, accidents happen, and hygiene must be maintained. Therefore, washability at 60 °C is a must.

How to wash your children's duvet correctly:

  1. Temperature: 60 °C on a gentle cycle. This reliably kills dust mites and bacteria.
  2. Detergent: Liquid mild detergent without fragrances. No fabric softener — it clogs fibers and reduces breathability.
  3. Drying: In the dryer on a low setting. For down duvets, add 2–3 tennis balls to the dryer — they fluff up the down and prevent clumping.
  4. Frequency: Wash every 2–3 months, more often if needed. Air regularly between washes.

Detailed care instructions can be found in our guides: Washing a down duvet and Washing a down pillow.

From what age a duvet instead of a sleeping bag?

The German Society for Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine (DGKJ) recommends not replacing a sleeping bag with a duvet in the first year of life. Infants cannot independently push a duvet away — this is a suffocation risk.

From 12 to 18 months of age, most children can switch to a light duvet. Prerequisites:

  • The child can roll over independently and push the duvet away.
  • The child sleeps in a crib (not a cradle).
  • The duvet is light enough (under 500 g).
  • No pillow in the bed (only recommended from approx. 3 years).

Many parents use a sleeping bag until their child's second birthday and then switch to a 100×135 cm duvet. This is a safe time — the child is motorically able to move freely.

From children's to adult duvet: When to switch?

The 100×135 cm children's duvet usually fits up to 6 to 8 years of age. At the latest, when your child moves into a 90×200 cm youth bed, they will need an adult duvet in 135×200 cm.

Signs that the children's duvet is becoming too small:

  • The feet regularly stick out from under the duvet.
  • The child moves freely at night and the duvet no longer covers them.
  • The child wishes for a "big duvet."

You can use this transition to upgrade to a high-quality down duvet. Our 90% down duvet in 135×200 cm is light enough for school children and grows with them into adulthood. Read more about the standard size in our guide Down Duvet 135×200: Buying Guide.

Manufacturer's tip: For children aged 3 and over, opt for better quality straight away. A high-quality down duvet lasts 8–10 years. A cheap microfiber duvet needs to be replaced after 2–3 years. Over its entire service life, a down duvet is often cheaper – and offers significantly better sleeping comfort.

Summary

The right children's duvet is a combination of safety, hygiene, and comfort. The most important points:

  1. Size 100×135 cm for children from approx. 18 months to 6–8 years
  2. Oeko-Tex Standard 100 Class 1 — the strictest harmful substance test, non-negotiable
  3. Washable at 60 °C — hygiene for children's bedding is crucial
  4. Lightweight — under 500 g for toddlers, under 700 g for preschool children
  5. Prefer down filling — lightest material with best climate regulation

Frequently Asked Questions

What size is a children's duvet?

The standard children's duvet is 100×135 cm. This size fits all common children's beds (70×140 cm) and is used from toddler age up to approx. 6–8 years. For babies, there is also the size 80×80 cm.

When does a child need a duvet?

Most children can switch to a light duvet from 12 to 18 months of age. Prerequisite: The child can turn over independently and push the duvet away. A sleeping bag is safer during the first year of life.

What material is best for children's duvets?

Down offers the best combination of light weight and climate regulation. Children sweat more at night than adults – down actively wicks away this moisture. Microfiber is the easier-to-care-for, cheaper alternative.

What does Oeko-Tex Class 1 mean?

Oeko-Tex Standard 100 Class 1 is the strictest harmful substance test for textiles. It applies to products that come into contact with baby skin and tests for formaldehyde, pesticides, heavy metals, and allergenic dyes. Every children's duvet should carry this certificate.

How often should a children's duvet be washed?

Every 2–3 months at 60 °C, more often if needed. Use liquid mild detergent without fragrances and no fabric softener. Tumble dry down duvets with tennis balls.

Is a down duvet safe for children?

Yes, as long as it is light enough (under 500 g for toddlers) and Oeko-Tex Class 1 certified. Down duvets with NOMITE certification are also suitable for children with dust mite allergies, as the dense casing keeps mites away.

When should you switch from a children's duvet to an adult duvet?

At the latest, when the child moves to a youth bed (90×200 cm), they need an adult duvet in 135×200 cm. This is typically between 6 and 8 years of age. Signs: The feet regularly peek out from under the duvet.

Do children need a summer duvet and a winter duvet?

Ideally, yes. Children regulate their body temperature less effectively than adults. A light summer duvet (thermal class 1–2) and a warmer winter duvet (thermal class 3–4) ensure an optimal sleeping climate all year round. Alternatively, a 4-season duvet can work as a compromise.
