Down duvet 200x200: The partner duvet in standard size

Reviewed by the BEFA Editorial Team — Duvet manufacturer since 1994

Quick answer: The 200x200 cm down duvet is the standard double bed size for couples with a mattress width of 160–180 cm. It is suitable for couples where both partners are not taller than 180 cm. For taller individuals, we recommend 200x220 cm. BEFA offers 200x200 down duvets in all fillings (60% and 90% down, goose down) and warmth ratings (summer, all-season, winter).

A shared duvet is more than just a commodity — it's a piece of shared everyday life. No cold bridge in the middle, no fighting for fabric, a cohesive sleeping experience. For couples who value closeness in sleep, a shared duvet is the natural choice.

200x200 cm is the standard size for couple duvets in Germany. It fits most double beds with a mattress width of 160–180 cm and offers enough overhang on both sides for snuggling. But is it the right size for you?

As a manufacturer, BEFA has been producing 200x200 down duvets for decades. In this guide, we explain which couples this size suits, which fill weights are sensible — and when you should opt for the longer 200x220 variant.

Who is 200x200 the right size for?

The 200x200 cm down duvet is suitable if the following conditions are met:

  • Mattress width: 160–180 cm (standard double bed)
  • Body height: Both partners not taller than 180 cm
  • Sleeping habits: Both partners want a shared duvet

With a length of 200 cm, a person with a body height of 175 cm still has a 25 cm reserve — enough to wrap themselves up without their feet being exposed. At 180 cm body height, it becomes tight: 20 cm reserve is sufficient when lying down, but when turning or stretching in sleep, the duvet may slide up.

Rule of thumb: If at least one partner is 180 cm or taller, we recommend the longer 200x220 cm variant.

200x200 vs. 200x220: The Difference

The only difference is the length: 20 cm. The width is identical. In practice, this means:

200x200 cm:

  • Suitable for couples up to 180 cm body height
  • Slightly lighter and easier to handle when making the bed
  • Wider selection of bed linen
  • Cheaper (less material = lower price)

200x220 cm:

  • For couples with at least one partner over 180 cm
  • More comfort — no exposed feet when turning
  • Slightly heavier and more voluminous
  • Bed linen selection is slightly smaller, but available from brand manufacturers

When in doubt: Choose the larger variant. A duvet that is too large is never a problem — one that is too short is annoying every night. Detailed information on the larger variant can be found in the 200x220 guide.

From our production: The demand for 200x200 cm has been stable in recent years, while 200x220 cm is growing. Nevertheless, 200x200 remains a sensible size — especially for couples who are both under 175 cm tall. The duvet is lighter, fits into any 9 kg washing machine, and the selection of bed linen is larger.

Fill Weights in 200x200: What do you need?

The fill weight determines the warmth performance of a down duvet. For the 200x200 cm size, the area is 4 m² — 2.9 times that of a standard duvet (135x200 = 2.7 m²). The fill weight is proportionally higher.

Reference values for 200x200 cm (90% down):

  • Summer duvet: approx. 500 g fill weight — light, cooling, for nights above 20 °C
  • All-season duvet: approx. 900 g fill weight — the most versatile option for spring to autumn and mild winters
  • Winter duvet: approx. 1,400 g fill weight — for cold bedrooms below 18 °C and people who get cold easily

With 60% down, the fill weights increase because the higher feather content insulates less — more material is needed to achieve the same warmth. However, the price is lower.

Which fill weight suits you depends on your personal warmth preference and the bedroom temperature. A detailed guide can be found under Winter duvet fill weight.

60% vs. 90% Down vs. Goose Down

60% Down Duvet

The entry-level class for down duvets. 60% down and 40% feathers — this results in a duvet that is heavier and more compact than the 90% variant. The warmth performance per gram is lower, but the price is also lower. For couples who like a noticeable duvet weight and want to save on price.

90% Down Duvet

The most versatile choice. 90% down and 10% feathers offer the best ratio of lightness, warmth performance, and climate regulation. The duvet is noticeably lighter than the 60% variant and fluffier. For most couples, this is the optimal solution. More on the topic of down content in our 135x200 buying guide.

90% Goose Down Duvet

The premium variant. Goose down is larger than duck down, has higher fill power, and regulates climate even better. The duvet is warmer and fluffier at the same fill weight. Goose down duvets are the most durable option — with good care, they last 15+ years.

From our production: We fill every 200x200 cm down duvet with exactly the specified fill weight — controlled by weighing each individual duvet after filling. The fill weight is scaled proportionally to the surface area: An all-season duvet in 200x200 cm has the same fill weight per square meter as in 135x200 cm. Thus, the warmth performance is identical — regardless of the size.

Shared or Separate Duvet?

Choosing a 200x200 double duvet means: one duvet for two. This has advantages and disadvantages:

Advantages of a shared duvet:

  • No cold bridge in the middle of the bed
  • Unified sleeping sensation, more closeness
  • Less laundry (one duvet instead of two)
  • Easier bed-making
  • Cheaper than two single duvets in total

Disadvantages:

  • "Duvet hogging" — if one partner pulls the duvet away in their sleep
  • No individual warmth rating possible — both sleep under the same duvet
  • Different warmth preferences can become a problem
  • Larger duvet requires a larger washing machine

Our advice: If both partners sleep at a similar temperature and neither pulls the duvet aggressively at night, a shared duvet is the more comfortable solution. For different warmth preferences (one freezes, the other sweats), two separate single duvets are the better choice — then each can choose their own warmth rating.

Care of Double Bed Down Duvets

A 200x200 cm down duvet requires a washing machine with at least 9 kg drum capacity. Most household machines have 7–8 kg — this is sufficient for single duvets, but not for double bed duvets.

Options:

  • Laundromat: Large machines with 12–18 kg. Cost: 8–15 Euros per wash cycle
  • Household machine 9+ kg: Works, but the duvet must be able to move freely in the drum
  • Professional cleaning: 25–40 Euros. Useful as an alternative, but not necessary — all BEFA down duvets are machine washable

Washing instructions for 200x200:

  • Gentle cycle, maximum 60 °C
  • Delicate detergent, no fabric softener
  • Maximum 800 revolutions
  • In the dryer: low temperature, tennis balls, 2–3 cycles
  • Wash 2–3 times a year (more if allergic)

Detailed washing instructions for all materials can be found in the guide Washing a down duvet.

From our production: All our down duvets — including those in 200x200 cm — are manufactured with cassette stitching and internal baffles. This is particularly important for double bed duvets because the larger surface area requires more compartments to distribute the filling evenly. Without internal baffles, the down would slide into the edges — leaving the center, where it is most needed, thin.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which 200x200 down duvet for winter?

For cold bedrooms (below 18 °C), we recommend the winter variant with 90% down — fill weight approx. 1,400 g in 200x200 cm. For heated bedrooms (18–21 °C), the all-season duvet (approx. 900 g) is sufficient.

Does a 200x200 duvet fit in a 7 kg washing machine?

No — a 7 kg machine is too small for a double bed duvet. The duvet would not have enough space to move freely in the drum. Result: The filling will not be rinsed properly. At least 9 kg is necessary, 10 kg is better.

Is 200x200 the same as Kingsize?

No. 200x200 cm is the standard German double bed size. Kingsize (also: oversize) in Germany is 240x220 cm. The American King-Size standard (264x234 cm) also differs from this.

Can I buy 200x200 bed linen everywhere?

Bed linen in 200x200 cm is available from most brand manufacturers (e.g., Fleuresse, Estella, Janine). In supermarkets, the selection is limited. Online shops offer the widest selection.

How does 200x200 differ from 200x220?

Only the length: 200×220 is 20 cm longer. The width is identical. For couples with heights under 180 cm, 200×200 is sufficient. From 180 cm upwards, we recommend 200×220. The price difference is small.

Do I need two pillows or one long one for 200×200?

Two separate pillows are standard and recommended. Everyone can choose their preferred pillow (firmness, height, filling). A continuous pillow 40×160 cm exists, but it is rare and makes individual adjustment difficult.

Are BEFA down duvets 200×200 available in all fillings?

Yes. We offer 200×200 cm in all variants: 60% down (summer, all-season, winter), 90% down (summer, all-season, winter), 90% goose down (summer, all-season, winter) and Tencel-down (summer, all-season). All are washable and certified according to Downpass.

Which 200×200 down duvet for allergy sufferers?

All BEFA down duvets have a NOMITE-suitable, tightly woven cover that prevents dust mites from penetrating. Additionally, they are washable at 60 °C, which reliably kills mites. Alternatively: The Primaloft-Bio duvet (synthetic, 60 °C, tumble dryer-suitable).
