Summer Duvet for Allergy Sufferers: PrimaLoft Bio vs. Tencel

During the warmer season, allergy sufferers need a duvet that is mite-proof, frequently washable, and breathable. The two best materials are Primaloft Bio and Tencel with down — both washable at 60 °C, both NOMITE-certified, and both offering high moisture regulation. The decision depends on whether a vegan filling is desired or if a down filling in a dense cover is acceptable. This guide explains which types of allergens each duvet excludes, what NOMITE truly means, and how consistent 60 °C washing effectively controls mite infestation.

What Allergy Sufferers Need from a Summer Duvet

The term "allergy-friendly bedding" is used indiscriminately in retail. For a truly allergy-suitable summer duvet, three properties must come together:

  • Washable at 60 °C: Only at 60 °C are dust mites and their allergens reliably destroyed. 40 °C is not enough — mites survive this temperature without problems.
  • Mite-proof cover: The cover (ticking) must be woven densely enough to prevent mites and their excretions from passing through. NOMITE is the established certificate for this.
  • High moisture regulation: Moisture attracts mites. A duvet that quickly wicks away moisture keeps the mite population low.

What doesn't help, but is often sold: anti-mite sprays, impregnations, and "hypoallergenic" seals without verifiable basis. The only two categories that reliably meet all three criteria are Primaloft Bio summer duvets and Tencel-down summer duvets with a Downpass certificate.

Which Allergy Does Each Duvet Exclude?

Dust Mite Allergy

By far the most common allergy in the bedroom. The triggers are not the mites themselves, but their faecal particles, which spread as fine dust when inhaled. Two measures are crucial: regular 60 °C washing of the duvet and a mite-proof cover. Both categories — Primaloft Bio and Tencel-down with NOMITE ticking — cover this.

Feather Quill Allergy (very rare)

A genuine allergy to bird feathers or down is extremely rare. Most alleged down allergies are actually dust mite allergies that had settled in the filling. Anyone with a real feather quill allergy (medically confirmed) must avoid down. In this case, only Primaloft Bio remains as a high-quality summer duvet.

Contact Eczema and Neurodermatitis

For sensitive skin, synthetic fibres and chemical finishes are often problematic. Tencel is often better tolerated than Primaloft here because the fibre is made from eucalyptus wood and does not require aggressive finishes. The Oeko-Tex Standard 100 certificate is crucial — it excludes problematic chemicals.

Mould Spore Allergy

Mould spores can settle in damp, rarely washed duvets. The best prevention is regular washing and complete drying. Primaloft Bio dries significantly faster than Tencel-down and is somewhat easier to care for in this regard.

NOMITE, Downpass, Oeko-Tex: What the Certificates Actually Prove

Certificates are often mixed on product labels — but they mean completely different things:

  • NOMITE: Refers exclusively to the density of the ticking fabric. A NOMITE-certified cover prevents mites from migrating in or their excretions from escaping. This makes natural fillings usable for house dust mite allergy sufferers.
  • Downpass: Origin certificate for down and feathers. Excludes live plucking and foie gras production. No direct allergy relevance, but an indicator of controlled quality.
  • Oeko-Tex Standard 100: Tests the final product for about 100 substances harmful to health. Not a specific allergy seal, but the basic prerequisite for any duvet that comes into contact with sensitive skin.
  • "Hypoallergenic": Not a protected term, no certificate, no binding definition. Worthless on its own without technical specification.

A serious allergy-friendly summer duvet usually has all three genuine certificates: NOMITE on the ticking, Oeko-Tex on the overall product, and for down fillings, additionally Downpass for origin.

Primaloft Bio: The Vegan Allergy-Friendly Summer Duvet

Primaloft Bio is a microfibre made from recycled polyester, whose fibre structure is technically based on down. For allergy sufferers, it offers two decisive advantages: it contains no animal components and is washable at 60 °C without damage.

Strengths for Allergy Sufferers

  • Vegan — no down, feathers or animal hair
  • Washable at 60 °C, frequent washing without problems
  • Tumble dryer safe on gentle cycle
  • Mite-proof cover ex works
  • No animal protein — excludes any cross-allergy to animal raw materials

Weaknesses

  • Chemical finishes can irritate highly sensitive skin — Tencel has a slight advantage here
  • Lifespan around 5 to 8 years (down-Tencel is more like 10+)
  • Not biodegradable

Tencel with Down: The Natural Fibre Alternative

For allergy sufferers who do not have a true feather quill allergy but only react to dust mites, the combination of a Tencel cover and 90% goose down filling is often the more comfortable solution. The Tencel cover is mite-proof (NOMITE), and the down is hygroscopic, actively transporting moisture out of the duvet — moisture being the most important factor for mites to thrive.

Strengths for Allergy Sufferers

  • Tencel cover absorbs moisture faster than cotton — mites find no habitat
  • NOMITE certificate on the ticking prevents mite migration
  • Washable at 60 °C (the cover in this case limits washing to 30–60 °C, depending on the model — check manufacturer's instructions)
  • Lifespan 10 years and longer
  • Tencel made from eucalyptus wood, without aggressive chemical treatment
  • Downpass-certified down from controlled European farms

Weaknesses

  • Not vegan
  • Excluded if you have a true feather quill allergy
  • Drying care is more demanding than with Primaloft

60 °C Wash: The Most Important Lever Against Mites

For allergy sufferers, regular 60 °C washing is more important than any certification. At this temperature, dust mites and their excretions are reliably destroyed. Below this, they survive — even rinsing cycles at 40 °C only help to a limited extent.

Our washing rhythm for allergy sufferers:

  • Summer duvet: Wash twice per season at 60 °C — at the beginning of the season and just before storage
  • Duvet cover: Weekly at 60 °C
  • Fitted sheet: Weekly at 60 °C
  • Mattress protector: Every two weeks at 60 °C
  • Pillows: Every three months at 60 °C

This sounds elaborate, but in routine, it's hardly more work than normal laundry washing. Detailed care instructions can be found in the guide Washing a Down Duvet.

Mite Allergy Table: Which Allergen, Which Measure

Allergen Recommended Filling Recommended Cover Washing Instructions
Dust mites Primaloft Bio or 90% Down NOMITE-cotton or Tencel 60 °C, twice per season
Feather quills (true) Only Primaloft Bio Cotton or Tencel 60 °C, frequently
Skin eczema / neurodermatitis Tencel-down or Primaloft Bio Tencel preferred Oeko-Tex 100 mandatory
Mould spores Primaloft Bio Cotton or Tencel Dry completely
Animal hair (cat/dog) Any, keep bedroom pet-free Tightly woven 60 °C weekly

2-Piece Sets for Consistent Allergy Hygiene

Many allergists recommend always having a second duvet ready — while one is being washed, the other is in use. This prevents intermediate layers where a damp, freshly washed duvet is not sufficiently dry but is still used. Particularly recommended for allergy sufferers:

What Allergy Sufferers Should Also Consider Besides the Duvet

The summer duvet is just one element of allergy-friendly bedding. Anyone who optimises it but ignores the rest will not realise its full potential:

  • Mite-proof mattress cover (encasing): Completely encloses the mattress, preventing mite colonisation in the mattress core. Recommended by allergists for diagnosed dust mite allergy.
  • Pillows also NOMITE-certified: What applies to the duvet also applies analogously to the pillow.
  • No carpet in the bedroom: Carpets are mite biotopes. Hard floors or short-pile carpets significantly reduce mite pressure.
  • Room air humidity 40–55%: Above 60% humidity, mites multiply explosively. A hygrometer in the bedroom is a worthwhile investment.
  • Ventilate daily, never make the bed immediately after getting up: Leave the bed open for at least half an hour so that moisture captured overnight can escape.

When a Summer Duvet Alone Is Not Enough

In cases of severe diagnosed dust mite allergy, the choice of summer duvet should be discussed with an allergist. The measures described here are effective but do not replace medical clarification. If a feather quill allergy is suspected, a provocation test is advisable before forgoing down — true feather quill allergies are significantly rarer than assumed.

The entire selection of allergy-suitable summer duvets can be found in the Summer Duvet Collection. Those seeking a more in-depth overview of material selection in summer duvets will find it in the Primaloft Duvet Collection and the Tencel Down Duvet Collection.

Conclusion: Vegans Choose Primaloft, with Down Choose Tencel

For allergy sufferers, both categories are suitable as long as the three core criteria are met: 60 °C washability, NOMITE cover, high moisture regulation. The decision depends on ethical preference and budget. Primaloft Bio is the vegan, easy-care choice with high washing flexibility. Tencel-down is the more comfortable, durable solution for those who do not have a feather quill allergy. Consistent 60 °C washing twice per season is more important than any certification. A summer duvet is one building block — combined with encasing, hard flooring, and controlled room humidity, it becomes a true allergy-friendly setup.

What makes BEFA different

Our allergen-proof ticking uses 133 threads per cm² woven density (NOMITE limit: 120 threads). This makes the ticking practically impenetrable for mites. In addition, we make the corner seams with a quadruple fold instead of the standard double fold — this eliminates the most common weakness through which mites can get into the ticking. This detailed work costs about 3 minutes of additional sewing time per duvet.

About BEFA Limburg

BEFA has been producing in Limburg an der Lahn since 1994. For allergy sufferers, we offer two lines of summer duvets: the NOMITE-certified down variant (for pollen and dust mite allergy sufferers, not for genuine feather allergies) and the vegan Primaloft Bio (for pet hair/feather allergies). Both are washable at 60 °C — the temperature at which house dust mites are killed.
