The 200x200 summer duvet is the classic couples' size – one large shared duvet for a double bed. The alternative: two separate 135x200 duvets, Scandinavian style. Both approaches have good reasons, and the right choice depends less on the mattress and more on the couple's sleeping habits. This guide honestly compares both approaches and shows which 200x200 summer duvet variations make sense for different sleeping arrangements.
200x200 as the couple's standard – where the size comes from
In Germany, the 200x200 is the most common shared size for couples. It fits standard double mattresses from 180 to 200 cm wide and covers both partners without slipping off the sides. The size originated from a time when double beds with a continuous mattress were common – today that's less relevant, but the format has remained.
Why 200x200 and not 220x240? Because longer formats offer more comfort but exceed the capacity of household washing machines. 200x200 still fits into a 9kg machine – below or above that, it becomes borderline. This is important for summer, as frequent washing is the rule, not the exception.
One duvet or two – the honest decision
In Germany, the shared large duvet is standard, while in Scandinavia, it's largely the exception. For decades, Swedes have used two single duvets in a double bed – and for good reason.
Shared duvet 200x200
- For whom: Couples who cuddle, have similar sleeping temperatures, and move similarly
- Pros: Feeling of closeness, classic look when making the bed, one duvet cover size instead of two
- Cons: One partner steals the duvet, different warmth preferences cannot be resolved, both suffer from restless sleep
Two single duvets 135x200 (Scandi method)
- For whom: Couples with different warmth preferences, restless sleepers, different bedtimes/wake-up times
- Pros: Each person gets the filling and warmth performance they need; no duvet-stealing debates; different washing cycles possible
- Cons: Two duvet covers instead of one, visually unusual in bed, requires a larger mattress for true comfort
Comparison table: When to choose a shared duvet, when to choose single duvets
| Situation | Better shared 200x200 | Better 2x 135x200 |
|---|---|---|
| Same warmth preference | Yes | No |
| One partner is cold, one is hot | Compromise needed | Clear solution |
| One partner moves a lot | Problem | No problem |
| Different bedtimes | Disruptive (duvet slips) | No problem |
| Small double bed 140x200 | Suitable | Too tight, overlaps |
| Mattress 180x200 or larger | Suitable | Ideal |
| Cuddle-oriented couple | Preferred | Possible, but more separated |
| One sleeper with snoring/heat problem | Difficult | More relaxed |
Summer duvet 200x200: Which filling for couples
For a shared duvet in summer, a simple principle applies: the filling must be chosen to suit the warmer partner – the colder one can always wear socks or a thin sweater. The reverse is not possible: someone who sweats under a duvet that is too warm cannot take off any more clothes.
Tencel-down 200x200 – the best solution for mixed couples
The Tencel 90% Goose Down Summer Duvet combines light down filling with a cooling Tencel cover. This is the option where the more sensitive partner sweats the least – and at the same time, the colder one doesn't freeze, because the down still retains warmth. If the warmth tolerance between the two deviates moderately, Tencel is the fairest compromise.
Primaloft Bio 200x200 – washable and allergy-friendly
For households with allergies or if both partners want to wash frequently, the Clima Primaloft Bio Summer Duvet is the right choice. 100% Primaloft Bio microfibre, biodegradable, washable at 60 degrees. No animal filling, NOMITE alternative without down.
The Scandi method in detail – when 2x 135x200 is the better choice
In Sweden, Norway, and Denmark, it has been standard for generations for everyone in a double bed to have their own duvet. This is not a signal of distance, but a pragmatic solution to a fundamental problem: two people rarely have exactly the same warmth preference.
For the Scandi method, a mattress of at least 180 cm wide is needed – 200 cm is better. Then the two 135x200 duvets only slightly overlap in the middle, and each sleeper has their own area without drafts. On a 140 mattress, the duvets would overlap too much – which looks odd and doesn't work.
Advantages of the Scandi method in summer
- Individual summer filling: The one who sweats gets a Tencel-down, the one sensitive to cold sticks to all-season. Same size, different filling.
- No duvet tug-of-war: The most common complaint about duvet-stealing ends abruptly with 2x 135x200.
- Separate washing: If one partner gets sick, only their duvet needs to be washed – not the entire large one.
- Different bedtimes/wake-up times: Whoever goes to bed earlier or gets up earlier won't wake their partner by tugging at the duvet.
- Fairer heat distribution: Both sides of the mattress cool down differently in summer (wall side vs. room side). Individual duvets compensate for this.
For these couples, the change is definitely worthwhile
If one partner complains that they are cold or hot, if discussions about duvet-stealing are part of the morning ritual, if different bedtimes create tension – then the Scandi method is not a luxury comfort, but a solution to a specific point of friction in everyday life.
BEFA 2-piece sets: Pre-configured Scandi solutions
Those who want to start the Scandi method directly with two identical duvets will find pre-configured 2-piece sets at BEFA at a couple's price. This saves individual ordering and ensures that both duvets come from the same batch – filling weight and workmanship are then identical.
- 2-piece set Pure Down Summer — for couples who both appreciate classic down
- 2-piece set 90% Down Summer — the classic with a light feather content for a bit more loft
- 2-piece set Clima 90% Down Summer — with Clima construction for better moisture regulation
- 2-piece set Clima Primaloft Bio Summer — animal-free, washable, allergy-friendly
If you want different fillings (one Tencel-down, one Primaloft), you can order two individual 135x200 duvets. The advice in the guide Summer Duvet 135x200 goes into more detail about single bed sizes.
When 200x200 is still the better solution
There are cases where the shared duvet is the simpler and, from a sleeping perspective, also the better choice. Not everyone needs to use the Scandi method – it's not a superior concept, but a different one.
Cuddle-oriented couples
For many couples, falling asleep together under one duvet is an emotional anchor. This is not nonsense – physical closeness at bedtime promotes relationship quality. If you consciously want that and both sleep at a similar temperature, 200x200 is the better choice.
Smaller mattresses (140x200 or 160x200)
With mattresses under 180 cm wide, the Scandi method no longer works well – the 135x200 duvets overlap too much and slip off each other. Here, the 200x200 or a 220x200 is the better format.
Same warmth preference
If both partners sleep at a similar temperature, lie still, and go to bed at the same time, there is no compelling reason for two duvets. The 200x200 is the easier option here: one cover, one purchase, one care routine.
Covers for 200x200 in summer
A 200x200 duvet needs a matching cover in exactly this format. The selection is smaller than for 135x200 – but still wide enough. In summer, we recommend linen or Renforcé cotton with a low thread count: both wick away moisture faster than satin.
Important for a 200x200 cover: The zipper should be at least 180 cm long so that the duvet does not get caught when putting on the cover. Cheap covers often only have a 140 cm zipper – which makes putting on the cover a struggle.
Caring for a 200x200 summer duvet
The underestimated disadvantage of a shared duvet: washing. A 200x200 only fits into household washing machines with a capacity of 9 kg or more – most standard household machines only have 7 or 8 kg. This means: laundromat or professional cleaning. In summer, when sweat works its way into the filling, this is a real drawback.
Two 135x200 duvets, on the other hand, can be washed separately in any normal washing machine – each on its own. For households with 7 or 8 kg machines, this is a strong argument for the Scandi option. Details on cleaning can be found in the guide Washing a down duvet.
The BEFA 200x200 summer range
At BEFA, almost every summer duvet is also available in the 200x200 format – from classic goose down to Primaloft Bio. All duvets are individually filled in Limburg, with a coordinated filling quantity for the respective format. For the shared summer duvet, we particularly recommend:
- Tencel 90% goose down – the cooling option
- Natur Exklusiv Clima 90% Goose Down Summer – premium variant with Clima construction
- Primaloft Bio – the washable alternative
- Camel hair duvet summer – for purists, especially moisture-regulating
All variants can be found in the summer duvet collection. For an all-season solution, we also recommend the guide All-season duvet: Advantages and use cases.
Decision aid: What suits you?
- You have similar warmth preferences, like to cuddle, and get up at the same time → 200x200 shared duvet
- One is cold, one is hot → 2x 135x200 with different fillings
- Different bedtimes, one moves a lot → 2x 135x200
- One partner has an allergy → 2x 135x200, one of which is Primaloft Bio
- Small double bed up to 160 cm mattress → 200x200 (Scandi needs more width)
- You want to test → Start with 2x 135x200 – easier to reverse than the other way around
What BEFA does differently
Our 200x200 summer duvet contains 600g of down filling – not 400g, as many competitors use for similar dimensions. The reason: with 4 m² of surface area, less filling leads to heat loss that couples try to compensate for by snuggling closer (and then sweat). The 2-piece set of two 135x200 duvets comes from a single filling batch, so that the duvets are identical in filling weight and colour of the ticking.
